Annie Mitchell is an interesting early studio potter. I became interested in early work by South Australian potteries and ceramic artists a few years ago and one of the first pieces I bought was a little hand built jug with a twist handle and decorated with thistles. It was signed "Annie Mitchell, Goodwood, SA" (a suburb where I had once lived) and this started my interest in learning more about this woman and her work. She worked as a china painter in 1920s before going to Qld to learn pottery at the Harvey School. As an advocate for the Arts & Crafts Movement, she disliked the potters wheel and most items are hand built using clay coils. She taught pottery at her studio in Goodwood SA in the 1930s and used a series of exercises to teach her students (similar to the Harvey School method). Her items are well signed and I love their naive folksy look. Mitchell's work is difficult to find now and is becoming more expensive unfortunately.
