McHugh's made pots (and pipes) in Tasmania from the late 1800's right up to the end of the Second World War. You can find an intro to the McHugh factory at www.auspottery.com/mcHugh_history.htm McHugh vases have recently become highly collectable which is a great shame as has forced a halt on my collection for now. On the other hand it was always a mystery to me why these hand made beautifully glazed vases were so cheap! Henry Travena worked at the pottery from the twenties through the thirties and his pieces are usually the most collectable. Francis Manallack is attributed with creating the highly sought after colbalt blue glaze that features so porminienlty in the McHugh output.

regards jamie | | [jashay23 15/10/2009] | | A. You will need to supply a big more information for a general comment. How high, how wide, what colours etc.
Cheers, grottypots | | [grottypots 09/09/2010] | | A. Hi - do you still have the McHugh pieces available? | | [geoffisaac20 11/08/2010] | | A. Hi there, just went to an auction where they tried to sell a few mchugh vases, very big but they were passed in,couldnt even get a 100 dollar bid to start with, even on ebay they sell very cheap, doesnt even matter how big they are.I've even noticed the price of pottery like remued on ebay go down a mile,30cm tall pieces selling for 125 dollars on ebay, even the gumleaf remued is not even selling on ebay, most of the people selling on ebay are dealers, pottery is worth what someone is prepared to pay.I collect clarice cliff but thats even gone down in price a lot | | [cactusmike 15/10/2009] | | | | Q. I have a really large McHugh
vase green and a mauvey-mushroom glaze. H 33cms W 22. Wide at the botom and narrower at the top. It is signed H McHugh Tasmania 53. What would it be worth? It is in excellent condition. | | [bleek 28/04/2009] | | A. Hi you could add picture of these to the Market Place section so members can get a look at them to help with valuing. Just login and go to the pottery section wusing the Full Menu and then click Add Items in the Market Place wiondow (no obligation for you to sell). | | [geoffisaac20 05/05/2009] | | | | Q. I just found a small vase , signed H McHugh Tasmania, and numbered 34. Does anyone know much about the numbering system used by McHugh? | | [grubduck 04/04/2009] | | A. I've been collecting McHugh pottery for about 3 years now and have seen pieces numbered up to 67, of those i'd have examples of 57 of them. I also have pieces that don't carry a number. Number 34 is as far as i know a sugar bowl, about 8.5 cm tall, straight sided tapering at top and slightly rounded at base. 7cm dia at top, about 9cm at base, it should have a lid with a small rounded ball shaped handle on top about 15mm diameter, hope this helps | | [rtkhd 13/05/2009] | | |
